My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is now my favorite version of Beauty and the Beast! This is an excellent story. Simply excellent! I cannot stress enough how much I enjoyed this book. The author really makes you feel as if you are right there in the situation with the main character, Meg, who is telling us her story through her journal entries. The writing is gritty and for the most part exactly the sort of writing you would expect to read in a journal. The sex scenes were outstanding, especially those in the first half. I literally felt my cheeks heat up; they were that good. There were a few times I felt unclear about what specifically was happening in a particular moment. The writing seemed a bit muddled in those places, or perhaps the author was relying too heavily on the reader’s ability to extrapolate. I couldn’t decide exactly what was wrong, nor did I take the time to re-read those paragraphs and think on it, because I was so excited by and invested in the story, I couldn’t bring myself to pause. The ending is a cliffhanger, and if it weren’t for the fact that there are currently two more books available in this series, I’d be quite upset. In fact I will most likely be upset once I finish book 3!
This book is not for the faint of heart, however. It is BDSM based, and though it’s not what I consider pornographic or gratuitously sexual, the emotions it invokes due to this theme are rather intense and could make less liberal souls squirm a bit. In fact the author issues a statement of warning in the front of her book, and she was definitely right to do so. If you’ve been a victim of violence, you may want to pass on this one.
